John Murphy was a Corporal in the US Marine Corps. He graduated college and had a successful career in the software industry. He’s the father of 3 adult sons. In addition to writing great stories to share, he enjoy a good cigar, riding motorcycles, shooting guns, drinking tequila, downhill skiing fast and traveling the world with his soulmate wife.
What was the very first thing you ever wrote?
A fiction novel “A Walk with a Dangerous Man” which has never been published.
Do you have any strange or interesting writing habits?
I do most of my writing with a cigar in hand. Sometimes that’s out on my deck in either Seattle or Scottsdale and other times it’s in a cigar lounge somewhere in the world.
Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?
In the current story, Proelium Veritas, there is a complicated battle aboard a spaceship with lots of characters involved. I actually did a computer model of the ship I had in my mind so that I could chart out the movement of the various players in a plausible way.
Are you involved with any writing groups or websites?
I have tried a number of them without much success so if anyone has found one they feel is helpful – I’m certainly open to it. Email me a link and I’ll check it out.
Are you loyal to one genre or do you like to play the field?
In the past, I have written both general fiction and non-fiction but I enjoy the adventures in space and the thought of life in the future so I’ll probably stick with Sci-Fi for the foreseeable future.
Do you spend a lot of time researching (plotter) or do you make things up as you go (pantser)?
I do a lot of plotting rather than actual research. I have several software products I use to help me organize my plotlines and keep the various points of view straight. Even though the main character in the entire Black Sabre series is Vaughn Killian, there are a number of other key characters and weaving together all of it into a cohesive story arc requires detailed plotting.
Do you (or do you plan to) write stand-alone stories or series?
There are at least 4 books in the Black Sabre series. Mission Veritas was the first. The current release is Proelium Veritas and Labor Day weekend the 3rd in the series gets released. I’m currently working on book 4 and who knows how many more there may be. I’m not out of story yet!
What are you working on right now?
Book 4 in the Black Sabre series which I hope to have done early 2018. I don’t have a title for it yet though.
If you could ask your main character one question, what would it be?
As the father of 3 sons, I feel like a mentor to Vaughn Killian. I often imagine one of my own sons and what guidance I would offer them as I steer Killian through the many obstacles and challenges he faces. Given that I use some of my own sons in the character development, I wonder if they see bits of themselves as they read the stories.
What do you think the secret to being a good writer is?
The first secret is to actually write rather than just talk about writing. Consider your first try just that – a first try. No one creates a symphony with their first effort. Once you have a draft, there are a number of great books where you can learn tips for improving your craft – I know I’ve read many and learned from all of them.
Who would play you in the story of your life?
My wife would say Matt Damon because we bear some physical resemblance and I like to imagine my life as a little Jason Bourne with the smarts and witty repartee of the character he played in The Martian.
Since the Carthenogens arrived from another planet nearly fifty years ago, the world has had no war—or so everyone thinks. But the Global Alliance, doing the bidding of Earth’s almond-eyed “saviors,” has been scooping up humans by the interstellar boatload. Only a handful of people know the truth: the elite resistance fighters of Black Saber.
Vaughn Killian saw it all firsthand while surviving two years of hell in the brutal purge of Bangkok. Now a fully trained Black Saber operative, he’s anxious to get back into the fight to save humanity from the deceptive peace-preaching aliens. Disaster strikes their remote space outpost and Killian winds up stranded and adrift a half a galaxy away from the planet that needs him most.
Killian took a vow: “Resist to the death.”
Luckily for mankind, he’s not dead yet.
